The works stopped at the staff door. They usually do.

We work alongside your contractors and suppliers. We survey, we audit, and we write down what is still outstanding. Behind the staff door is usually where that list is longest.

Why back of house is always last and usually dropped

The works covered the bedrooms and the public areas, and then stopped at the staff door. That is true of almost every hotel refurbishment, and it is nobody's failing: guests never see back of house, so when the price comes back high, it is the first thing to come out of the scope.

What we cover

Staff corridors and stairs. Changing rooms and staff toilets. Staff canteens and offices. Service lift lobbies. Linen stores, plant rooms and plant routes. Wall protection, flooring, lighting, doors and decoration, finished to a standard that lasts in a building that works around the clock.

What it does for recruitment and retention

Staff spend their whole shift back of house. A building that is finished on the guest side and tired on the staff side tells them where they stand, every shift, without anyone saying a word. Putting it right is something they notice on the first day.

Doing it without stopping service

Back of house never closes. We work a section at a time, keep a route open past every working area, and agree the timings with each department head before we start: housekeeping, kitchen, maintenance and front office.

Standards we work to

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 for staff welfare facilities, food hygiene requirements wherever stores and kitchens are involved, and the hotel's fire strategy for compartmentation and fire-stopping along service routes.

What you receive

A condition survey of staff corridors, changing rooms, stores, offices and plant routes. A scope priced area by area. A programme phased around shift changes, deliveries and housekeeping, agreed with the operations team before we start.

Costing it against the front of house you just finished

Back of house finishes cost less per square metre than guest areas. We price it item by item, alongside what you have just spent on the front, so you can see the proportion for yourself. The kitchen sits right behind it: read about the kitchen, or about our work with hotels.

Show us behind the staff door. Trading through it or closed for works, the choice is yours. See all our service lines, book the gap report, or call us.
