Health, safety and the environment
A hotel stays a home for guests and a workplace for staff while we work in it. These are the controls we put in place on every job.
Before we start
Risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) for every task, and the construction phase plan required under CDM 2015. Every operative is inducted on site before starting. We check the asbestos register before any intrusive work, and where it is missing a refurbishment and demolition survey is carried out, as HSE guidance HSG264 requires. The fire risk assessment is reviewed so fire precautions stay live throughout.
Permits to work
Hot works, isolations of electrical, water and gas services, work at height and work in confined spaces all need a written permit. Hot works carry a fire watch after the work stops. No fire alarm or sprinkler zone is isolated without the hotel's written agreement and a plan for the time it is off.
Keeping guests and staff apart
Work areas are segregated with hoarding or barriers and signed. Escape routes stay clear at all times. Dust is controlled at source with extraction and sheeting, and noisy work is kept to the hours you agree. Service lifts and deliveries are booked around check-in, check-out and housekeeping.
Every day on site
A supervisor on site for the whole shift, a short daily check-in with the duty manager, toolbox talks for the team, and the work area cleaned down before we leave each day.
Waste and materials
Waste is segregated and removed by licensed carriers, with waste transfer notes kept on file. We repair and reuse doors, joinery and furniture before replacing them where the specification allows, and use low-VOC paints and adhesives in occupied areas.
Reporting
Accidents and near misses are recorded and reviewed, and anything reportable under RIDDOR is reported. Findings are shared with the hotel, not kept from it.
